Lesson in Life #4: Improvise, Maximize, and Call 1-800-Handle-It If You Can!
Killington, Vermont
So...the free wheeling, improvising, flying by the seat of our pants, maximizing all experiences and making the best of things Jacobs way of traveling ❤️😂ran up against something we have only seen a few times in our lives...NO Vacancy!😂
Every room for miles around Dartmouth has been booked for graduation for months...so, what did we do?? Ha! First, we panicked. Then...We thought hmmmm...there are so many beautiful mountain ski resorts around Dartmouth that are probably empty in the summer let’s try there...
And…let’s just say that thought was hopeful and risky…we could drive all the way up there and the place could be shut down for the summer OR…we thought, maybe it will be packed like the breweries, vineyards, and places to stay outside of Charlottesville and Wintergreen in Virginia during the summer often are…either completely empty or completely full, both could be problematic for us.
Oh…and did we mention that we are completely exhausted and haven’t slept in close to 2 days.😂 This could be a potential 2 hour time killing boondoggle that brings us back to sleeping on Jack’s now empty dorm room floor.😅😂
Well, it worked out beautifully. This time. So far.
Now, did we have to drive up into the beautiful Green Mountains of Vermont while the sun was setting? Yep. Did we hope that one of the delicious restaurants up there would still be open instead of “closed for the season” like most said on their signs...yes. Did we have one of the best meals in years with views of the Killington ski slopes...uh huh. Are we sleeping under the mountain stars at an awesome ski lodge...yes, we are...❤️do we have to get up earlier to make it back down the Mountains for graduation...afraid so...is that risky? Probably.
Did we read a sign on the way up that said “Expect Long Delays Paving starts on June 13”…uh, yes.
Have Michelle and I been wearing the same clothes for 2 days? Well, yes...
Was it a little embarrassing to tell the other parents when they asked where we were staying…uhhhh…about an hour or so away from here…we think. Well…maybe just a tiny bit.
Was it worth all the extra effort and risk? Of course!❤️
We have found throughout our lives that planning IS essential for a good time on vacations. Research IS essential for maximizing your experiences. But sometimes, many times, the best experiences in life are unplanned…and creative improvising can lead to discoveries of a lifetime.
And when problems come up or unexpected events occur while on vacation …as our brother in law Tom is FAMOUS for saying and doing in our family…sometimes you just have to dial 1-800-HANDLE-IT. If you can.😅😂
We can’t wait to return to Killington, Vermont one day in the future during the winter and see the other side of this beautiful mountain resort’s personality.
